Westfield Matildas' captain, Melissa Barbieri, will be the special guest at the 2010 All Nations Women's Cup at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Monday July 5.

The All Nations Women’s Cup is a football competition for women from multicultural communities.

In 2006, a pilot football program was offered and facilitated by Football Federation Victoria (FFV) for young females of a multicultural background including Sudanese, Somali and Eritrean backgrounds in Carlton.

FFV CEO, Mark Rendell, said the program was introduced after a need for a program to cater for the cultural, religious beliefs and physical needs of females from multicultural communities was identified.

“With sport not being the most important role for females from these backgrounds, it was imperative that we created relationships with the families of the participants to explain that sport plays an important role in their lives,” Mr Rendell said.

“And with other barriers including lack of money, uniforms and transport, we needed to create a program that was accessible and sustainable for the participants. With the success and knowledge drawn from this program several other programs across Victoria have been implemented.

“This program provides the opportunity for women from multicultural communities to participate in the sport as players, whilst also encouraging involvement in coaching, refereeing and volunteering pathways.”

With these programs taking place across Victoria and no real competition to participate in, each of the working groups came together and formed the All Nations Women’s Cup. This Cup takes place four times a year during the school holidays, and provides an opportunity for participants to play in a competition. Each competition runs over one day in a round robin format. Uniforms, equipment, referees and lunch are all provided, with a presentation and giveaways at the end of the day.

The program is run with the support of the City of Melbourne, VicHealth, and partner organisations including Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre, Vicseg, Doutta Galla Youth Services, South East Region Migrant Resource Centre, Centre for Multicultural Youth, AVWA, and Vass.
