South Melbourne secured a vital three points against Altona Magic today, keeping their 2010 finals hopes alive.
The rescheduled match was supposed to be played in round 12, but was postponed for this “catch up round”, along with the Bentleigh Greens versus Heidelberg United round eight match.
Altona Magic were the first on the score board today, although it was an own goal as Mathew Theodore’s shot deflected off a South Melbourne defender.
It looked like Altona would go into half time with the edge, but on the 45th minute, Steven O’Dor levelled the scores.
O’Dor followed up again soon after half time, putting away a glancing header. New recruit, Kyle Joryeff, secured the victory for the home team, scoring in the 83rd minute.
South Melbourne has now moved up to eighth spot on the table, two points out of the top five. Altona Magic remains in last place on 13 points.
On Friday night, the Bentleigh Greens welcomed Heidelberg United to Kingston Heath Soccer Complex.
The Bentleigh Greens’ match the previous week was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, and unfortunately the break didn’t do them any favours.
Heidelberg United hasn’t lost a match since round nine, and they went into this game with an unchanged line up.
The match could’ve gone either way, but on the 76th minute, Heidelberg’s Saso Alexovski scored the winning goal, sinking Bentleigh’s hopes of securing any points.
The victory sees Heidelberg move into the top five on 21 points, and Bentleigh are now in ninth position on 18 points. However, Bentleigh do have a game in hand, and will play their round 16 match against Northcote City on Wednesday 28th July at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex.
Northcote City’s Trent Rixon is still the Victorian Premier League’s leading scorer on 11 goals, with Melbourne Knights’ Kevin Townson (10 goals) and South Melbourne’s Fernando De Moraes (nine) not too far behind.
