Over 80 girls from different multicultural communities participated in the All Nations Women's Cup at the State Netball and Hockey Centre in Parkville on Monday.
The girls, aged between 12 – 20 years, made up eight teams, and were split into two divisions for the competition. Each team played four games for the day. The teams who participated were:
- Flemington/ Kensington (A and B)
- South East Region Migrant Resource Centre (A and B)
- Brunswick Zebras (A and B)
- Vass
- The Commandos
Each team consisted of girls from different multicultural backgrounds including Sudanese, Somali, Eritrean, Afghanistan, Iraq and Vietnamese.
After a day of close games the grand finals came down to the Commandos versus Flemington/Kensington A, and the Brunswick Zebras v Flemington/Kensington B.
The first half saw both the Commandos and Flemington/Kensington A trying their hardest to score, but it was nil-all at half time. In the second half the Commandos took the lead and eventually won the game 3 – 0.
It was another close game in the other final, with the Brunswick Zebras taking the victory 3 – 1.
All participants received lunch and healthy food and drink throughout the day.
At the end of the day special guest, Matildas’ captain, Melissa Barbieri spoke to the girls about her football experiences and encouraged them all to follow their dreams.
All participants received a free football, and they all eagerly lined up to get a photo with Melissa and get their football signed.
