Victoria has finished the 2010 National Junior Championships for Girls in emphatic style, with both the under 15 and under 17 teams winning their final matches against Tasmania.
Under 15’s
Victoria 3-0 Tasmania
Goal scorers: Kariah White, Julia Sardo, Tiffany Eliadis
Victoria faced a tougher than expected match against the Tasmanian side to complete their 2010 campaign.
Tasmania’s high-pressure style of play pushed Victoria back, but it was an important challenge for the team. This allowed Victoria to show their strength in playing out from the back with Ebru Hasan, and captain, Claudia Fruscalzo, showcasing their passing ability.
The Victorian team’s ability to use the wings lead to several chances being created, with resultant crosses from Helina Vunderl-Messis and Kariah White. White also finished the Championships with a remarkable record of scoring in every single match she played in.
Jessica Au once again impressed with her superb distribution from the midfield splitting the Tasmanian defence wide open on several occasions. Both goalkeepers, Megan Thompson and Madeline Hince were extremely valuable in their role starting the attack from the very back.
Coach Michael McBride was delighted with the overall performance of the team.
“The girls should be extremely proud of their achievements here in Coffs Harbour. This is a pressurised environment and each player was able to rise to the occasion. Fantastic effort by all!”
Under 17’s
Victoria 8-1 Tasmania
Goal scorers: Morgan Anderson, Ellen Turner, Ashley Brown, Jackie Vogt
Everything seemed to click into place for the last match of the tournament as the Victorian team picked apart Tasmania.
Although the score line would suggest Victoria kept enormous pressure on the opposition box, it was the very exciting brand of counter attacking football that had the onlookers enjoying the spectacle.
Morgan Anderson helped herself to a hat-trick, with another long range free kick from Jackie Vogt, who is rapidly making a name for herself as a set piece specialist.
The pacey Ellen Turner got on the scoresheet for the first time in the tournament and Ashley Brown added to her tally.
Morgan Anderson’s goals obviously helped her stand out in a great team performance, whilst Ashley Brown on the wing impressed along with Jackie Vogt at the back.
The coaching team were pleased at how well the players bonded over the last three months and how they represented Victoria with pride.
They were also very happy with the commitment and responsibility shown over the duration of the tournament.
With only a couple of matches on match day four, none of which involving Victoria, all eyes will be on the announcement of the Championship All-Star Team in the afternoon. Victoria has several players in contention for the squad who will take on the Group A Champions.
