The Oakleigh Cannons have reclaimed top spot on the Alanic Victorian Premier League ladder, defeating the Melbourne Knights yesterday afternoon at Knights Stadium.

The Knights got off to a fantastic start, scoring in the first minute thanks to lively striker Jean-Charles Dubois.

The Knights were able to hold out Oakleigh for the rest of the first half, and they looked the better team for the majority of the match. But late in the second half the Cannons kicked into gear, and they were able to score twice via Ricky Diaco and Michael Curcija within 10 minutes.

On Saturday afternoon, the Green Gully Cavaliers were too good for the Bentleigh Greens at Green Gully Reserve. Despite going into the match with a number of key players missing, including captain Jeffrey Fleming, the Cavaliers ran out the match convincing winners, 4-0.

Green Gully are now comfortably sitting in fourth spot on the table, two points clear of Heidelberg United and Dandenong Thunder.

The loss for Bentleigh leaves them in ninth place on the ladder, six points out of the top five.

Northcote City and Sunshine George Cross went head-to-head on Saturday afternoon in their round 17 match at John Cain Memorial Park.

Sunshine were trying to snap their losing streak that stretches back to round nine, and Northcote were looking to win their third match in a row.

Sunshine got off to a horror start, when Christos Konstas scored an own goal in the 17th minute. From there the blustery conditions took hold of the game, and it wasn’t until the 82nd minute that Northcote were able to score the sealer and another in the 90th minute, to finish off a great day for Northcote City.

On Saturday night at George Andrews Reserve, Dandenong Thunder continued their rise up the Alanic VPL table, earning their fifth win in a row against a dejected Altona Magic outfit. The winning goal came on the 45th minute courtesy of Ibraim Ibraimi.

After the match, Thunder coach Stuart Munro said the team’s hard work was paying off.

“We’ve worked very hard in the last few weeks playing against top teams and we knew this week was a different type of thing.”

Hume City has edged out Richmond in a close battle at Broadmeadows Valley Park on Sunday. The see-sawing match saw both sides have their fair share of opportunities, but it was Richard Cardozo who converted the goal that ultimately won them the match in the 26th minute.

Richmond has slipped out of top spot, now sitting in second, and Hume City are in third place on 28 points.

Heidelberg United has continued their four-year unbeaten run against South Melbourne, winning 2-0 at Olympic Village last night.

It was a closely contested match up until the 76th minute, when Nick Marinos converted his first of two penalties.

The victory has seen Heidelberg stretch their 2010 unbeaten run to nine matches, and leaves South’s finals hopes hanging in the balance.
