Heidelberg United’s amazing run comes to an end

After nine rounds of football, Heidelberg United has finally been defeated, falling to Altona Magic on Saturday night at Paisley Park Soccer Complex.

Heidelberg’s amazing run came to an end in round 18 of the Alanic Victorian Premier League, with Altona earning a much-needed win and breaking their three game losing streak. Heidelberg’s previous defeat came way back in round nine against Northcote City, when they lost 5-1 at Olympic Village. 

Dandenong Thunder continued their dominant form, defeating the Bentleigh Greens 2-0 at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex on Friday night. New coach Andy O’Dell couldn’t lift the Greens to victory, as Dandenong’s Jamie Reed scored a brace for the Thunder. 

Hume City put on a dominant display against the Oakleigh Cannons on Friday night, cruising to a 3-1 victory after scoring all three goals in the first half. Hume have now displaced Oakleigh from top spot, with Hume now the league-leaders on 31 points. Unfortunately Hume City’s win was soured with injuries to coach Andy Vlahos, and Steven Pace.

On Saturday afternoon, Northcote City and the Green Gully Cavaliers played out a one-all draw, after Northcote’s James Kalifatidis secured the equaliser in the 89th minute. Andy Vargas opened the scoring in the 56th minute, but Gully surrendered all three points after they couldn’t hold on to their one-goal lead for the entire match.

South Melbourne earned three valuable points at John Cain Memorial Park yesterday, defeating the Melbourne Knights and keeping their finals hopes alive. Following a cagey first half where the Knights looked the better team, South Melbourne took their chances and finished deserved victors.

South Melbourne are now in eighth place on the ladder with 22 points, while the Knights are equal with Altona Magic on 16 points.
